Womens Issues

Its 21st century but is it really? Did we truly change ourselves? And these questions aren’t something that I am asking economically or financially. These questions are for your thoughts, culture, self-independence, freedom of speech, etc. These categories are just something only men in our society can have it without asking for it or fighting for it. Looks like the whole idea about having a right to live according to the way one wishes is for the supreme gendering of our nation. Women are not suppose to express their thoughts, they have to follow the culture their husbands or father decide for them, self-independence? what is it? Freedom of speech, oh please that is not a fundamental right only men on our nation is suppose to have. Starting from mythology to this modern world everything revolves around a man and women are considered as the cause of destruction if not kept under control. We have everything in our country. Women fly airplane, save lives of thousand of people and yet when it comes to having a place in your society it is always men and women. Women are bound to follow the footsteps shown my men. There are hundreds of example, and if you cannot see one just look at the news. Every day these are multiple cases of rape, and domestic violence. And in most of them the victim is a female. If this still doesn’t convience you much maybe history will. Delhi, NIRBHAYA rape case, an event that shook our souls. She was raped because those men thought she was wrong as she is decided to watch a movie at night. According to them no decent girl does that, and she is deserved to be raped. Story of padmavati, queen of Chittor. Kingdom was attacked only because Alauddin Khilji feel in love with the queen and decided to seize as a property. Is it true? That women are an investment that people make and try to run according to their wishes. Our society has changed no doubt. But ask yourself is it enough? They are not safe, secure, independent every day to them is a threat to life. So have we actually progressed as a nation? Or we are just lying to ourselves. Recently I read a post of a lot of people saying roses are red, violets are blue lets break this patriarchy, me and you. What exactly is patriarchy? Is it being confused with misogyny.

Patriarchy is the rule of men that controls all aspects of society. Feminism stands for the respect for every  human being irrespective of the gender. Misogyny refers to attacking women verbally or in the societ by the means of body shaming, public shaming for the clothes they wear, the way they look, their profession, personality, achievement and more often than not simply for the way they are. Most often, misogyny is carried out by women towards some other women for the clothes they wear, the way they look, their profession, personality, achievement and more often than not simply for the way they are.

Every body writes for women empowerment, femism, breaking strereotypes, women supporting women, etc. But has any one ever looked at what if going on in the minds of the people? Can any body ever understand what the history and the community has put in the minds of the ordinary public? What exactly does the genera public think of the image of the women?

As a woman, I have always thought about what would life be if I had not been one? Many women think the same way as I do. Why does the grass feel greener on the other side. Since the day a child is born, the choices of clothes and toys are taken by parents. The color pink is always associated with the girls. Do you know why pink color is most often associated with girls and women in general? It is because pink is a latin word for vagina.

This also means that women have been objectified since ages and hence we are always associated with our body organs. Ridiculous, right? Well, what’s more surprising is the idea behind making pink color clothes, toys or even chocolate wrappers for girls!

Keeping the color combinations aside, as the child grows up, she wants to do things out of curiosity. Every time she tries to step out of the societal norms and boundaries she is stopped. A recent example of this has been the recent movie Gunjan saxena on Netflix. She was always looked down by her fellow officers as well as her own brother for trying to pursue a career in flying.

Every time a girl breaks a stereotype people are suddenly surprised, as if this is the first time this has happened.  This is because people still refuse to believe what all a woman can do. This is why females have to support each other to break this normal of the society and to emerge as new.

In this article we will try to understand what has led to this current scenario and why women still face these issues even after reaching the 21st century:

Issues in Indian Mythology:

  1. The debt of Madhavi: During the early days of the time of developed humans in history, Indian students and teachers had some basic courtesy, manners and relationship. The guru or the teacher never took money or dhan in exchange of the knowledge they shared with their students or shishya. Instead, they asked for Guru dakshana if they liked to. Guru dakshana refers to a gift of gratitude given by the shishya to the gurus as a token of thanks. While some of these rituals were obviously nice things as Mata Saraswati says, “ Knowledge can not be bought or sold, it can only be achieved through hardwork or parishram ”,  many people were still trapped in the cycle of Guru Dakshina which made them do the most inhumane things ever witnessed by mankind.

Similar was the case of Gallava, who had to give Guru dakshina to his guru, the great sage, Maharishi Vishwamitra. Gallava was a common man who had a small and sweet family. He asked his Guru as to what he would like as his Guru dakshina, to which he replied that he wanted 800 white horses who have exceptionally black ears. Now ofcourse, this was the kind of natural selection which never occurred in the evolutionary process of horses.

As expected he did not have 800 horses, that too white in color with exceptionally dark colored ears.

Gallava had a daughter. She was mature enough to get married. She was beautiful and blessed with a vardaan that she will bear only male children who will go on to become great emperors and great warriors. Every time she delivered a baby boy, she will become a virgin again.

So, the great sage Maharishi Vishwamitra asked him to marry his daughter off to a king who has 800 white horses with exceptionally black ears. In exchange of his daughter, he can ask for those horses and then pay his Guru dakshina.

But of course no king had 800 horses!  So he decided to marry his daughter to three kings who would give him 200 white horses with exceptionally black ears in exchange of his daughter whenever she delivers their son. Later on he decided to keep his daughter in debt to Guru sage Maharishi Vishwamitra for the debt of 200 more white horses with exceptionally dark or black ears.

Now, the entire story makes me wonder, one, how does this make a woman stronger. She is being used as a property as if his father, his fathers teacher or the three kings have any right over her life or her body. Entirely wrong! This was the time when she had to agree to everything her father or husband said because of patriarchy. This was what was expected of her.

Imagine if such a thing happens to any woman right now, will the society except the same from her now? Of course not. She will be asked to stand up against this patriarchy, the guru and the father along with the three princes will be put behind bars!

This was not just being used as property becoming an issue now, but also what gave them the right to violate the privacy of her body. This is why many curse words have now come up using such situations, that too because of no fault of the victim! Of course such situations can not happen within the boundaries of the law and for the good, yet it paved way for the many issues women have faced over the time. This is what paved way for the patriarchy to treat a woman like property and not as a human being!

  • Ahilya kand: Not many people know about this, but Lord Brahma had a daughter named Ahilya. Lord brahma was a Brahmin. He wanted his daughter to marry rishi Gautam whie Indra Dev really adored Ahilya.

Ahilya decided to marry rishi Gautam according to her father’s choice. Soon they got married and started living a happy life. One day Indra Dev decided that enough was enough. His ego gave way for him to commit something which should have never happened in the history of human kind. He decided to deceive the couple.

One day when it was early morning, rishi gautam decided to go for his daily puja. He bid his wife goodbye and left. The very next moment of his departure, indra dev entered Mata Ahilya’s house in the exact form and shape of her husband rishi gautam. Mata ahilya was not able to disguise between the two and hence made intimate contact with Indra Dev.

When RIshi gautam returned back to his house he saw Indra Dev leaving his house in Rishi Gautams form. On witnessing this, he understood what could have happened in his absence. He was very angry on seeing Indra Dev and even more disgusted at the entire situation. On seeing what had happened, Mata Ahilya felt ashamed as well as cheated because she thought that what she did was an intimate affair between her and her husband and not an unknown man.

In this angry situation, Rishi gautam gave a punishment or shrap to Indra dev by making him ugly as black marks on his face. His face also appreared entirely burnt. On the other hand, Rishi Gautam punished Mata Ahilya by making her a stone. she could only be restored back in to human form only if she was touched by Lord Rama.

Now, if we think about it, at least Lord indra was given a chance to survive, he was given a chance by Lord Ganesha that if he would never commit such crime again in the future only then he would be given a second chance. Thus, his face was made normal again while mata ahilya remained a stone. Mata ahilya had not committed any crime yet she was punished. she was punished for something that she did not know about. she was trusting only her husband. and yet husband gave her a punishment more than the criminal himself.

this is how blaming the victim has come into the picture, it has been happening since the time of Ahiya, that is since the beginning of human kind. even now anything and everything happening against a woman it is said that the woman only is responsible for the same. ridiculous right? this patriarchy get the solereason why women of the 21st century have still not got human rights similar to the rival male counterparts.

  • Sita haran: sita haran is the most important part of the Indian mythology or you can say The hindu mythology. We all know that sita was abducted by ravan but we do not know what made him take this step. It is often believed that woman are like treasure. It is often believed women can’t live alone. is believed that women need men to survive. it is believed that women are in danger. Well, how is this thinking has been coming along since the era of Rama.

When Ravan killed his own sister Shrupnakha’s husband because he was trying to avenge a plot against Ravan, his sister became very angry as now she had become a widow. She had lost her husband. In revenge she decided to come to the land of India and find a husband for herself. in India she saw Ram and brother Lakshmana, having a fight with the demons. on seeing this, she was very much impressed and decided to marry Ram. She used to meet him every day just to lure into or love.

But, ram was already married to Sita. he did not like Shrupnakha. he saw her as a friend. When shrupnakha found out back he was already married, she decided to become his second wife. But Ram had already promised his first wife, Sita that he will only marry once in his life. Thus, he could not marry Shrupnakha. he offered her He offered her to marry his brother lakshman because he did not take such a vow.

Shrupnakha got very upset and decided to kill his first wife, Sita so that now he could have only one wife that is her. As soon as she picked up her weapon, a knife was thrown at her by luxman. The knife cut Shrupnakha’s nose and her nose started bleeding. The tip of her nose was cut and bleeding. she started looking ugly. she got very angry at sita. she condemned her and told her that she will face the same fate. She too will be left without a husband.

This made people very upset. one day she saw a Golden deer. he was hurt from an arrow. she asked them but catch it for her so that she could take care of it and heal his wound. The deer was actually a demon. it was sent by Ravan so that Ram and Lakshman could go behind it while Sita was left alone In the hut.

When only Sita was left, Ravan came to the hut disguised as a rishi. he asked for some food. Now, luxman asked sita not to cross the lakshman rekha for her own protection. but the sage ask her to cross it because he could not cross it. he said if sita did not cross it, then major circumstances would take place. Sita what scared she decided the cross the line.

As soon as Sita crossed the line, Ravan un disguised himself from a sage to his real form. He held Sita’s hand and forcefully made her cross the border of the hills where she was residing with her Husband and her brother in law. He made her sit in the Pushpak vimaan which he had taken away from his cousin Kuber after killing him.

Sita was then taken to Lanka, where Ravan resided with his family. he made her a prisoner. Yet, Sita did not feel ashamed because she knew that she had not done anything wrong, rather it was Raavan who had crossed his limits. So this eventually attracted raavan towards her and he decided to marry her.

But sita was a woman of bravery. She said no to all the offers made to her. She said she will wait for her husband to come and take her away from the land of demons. She was given a lot of security and servants to take care of her while ravan prepared for war with Ram, in which he eventually died.

Here, we should note that Sita was ram’s most important Strength which ravan decides to take away as an object. He treats sita as an object which could be won by war. What he did not understand that taking away a person from his her family destroys a human being.

Even if wars had to take place, they should not involve the exchanging of women as a kind of wealth or property. Even now, women are abducted and their advantage is being taken. India has the most number of cases of abduction related crimes to women even though we believe Bharat is our mother and we pray to a lot of dieties.

  • sita’s agni pariksha: When lord rama wins war against lanka, he makes Vibhishan the king of Lanka as he kills ravan. He goes to meet Sita with a sense of fear and objection.

While everybody thinks rama is going to bring back Sita to Ayodhya, Ram on the other hand thinks about the long lived behavior towards woman who Spends a night at a place other than her husband or father. While Sita had been doing the same, but without her consent.

Ram tells Sita that they can be in a husband and wife relation anymore as she had spent so many days away from her husband and thus she would be considered impure in Ayodhya, even though he believed in utmost purity of Sita’s mind and soul.  he starts calling her my lady on hearing which Sita looses her patience.

Sita asks Lakshman to make a pyre and light it with fire. On hearing this lakshman starts crying. He says that he will stay with her sister in law forever or will even die on her behalf but asked her to step down from the pyre.

Even Lord ram asks her to step down from the burning pyre of fire. But she did not listen she insisted. she insisted one sitting on the pyre. once the fire was completely lit, the god of fire emerged and protected Sita from the burning pyre. Soon the fire also burnt down. The god of fire explained that the mind and soul of Mata Sita was so pure that even fire or agni could not be that pure.

Lord rama accepted his mistake here and asked for forgiveness form mata Sita. This story tells us that if  a woman spends a night in the house of an unknown man she is considered impure while if a man does the same, he is not considered characterless or impure. this hypocrisy in the world of patriarchy is not what Indian women or the women of the world in general deserve.

Sita tyaag: we all know now what happened in Lanka. When lord rama wins war against lanka, he makes Vibhishan the king of Lanka as he kills ravan. He goes to meet Sita with a sense of fear and objection.

Yet again when they reached Ayodhya, the people of Ayodhya became really upset because Sita who once spent a long time in the land of ravana as a prisoner had now become the most important person that is the queen of Ayodyha. Apart from that as soon as she became the queen, Mata sita became pregnant. This made the villagers even more curious as to whether the child belonged to Lord Ram or Ravan.

Even though she had proven her purity and innocence by sitting on the pyre of fire and the god of fire actually acknowledging the fact that she was innocent, yet the villagers did not understand this. They decided to revolt against the same.

This made Lord ram very upset. He had to sacrifice his wife and children just because the people did not understand her. She had to give up the title of queen. Not just that she was not told by her husband Ram that she was taken to the forest again to live there forever, but her brother in law took her to the forest saying they were going to the Ashram to meet the rishis and King Ram will follow them.

On reaching the forest she was told by lakshman that it had all been a mistake. Infact she was even told that it was her mistake that she came to the forest along with them on the 14 year exile in the first place.

On hearing this, Sita decides to commit suicide, but she was the daughter of nature. Mother nature stopped her from committing suicide because she was carrying the children and the only symbols of her marriage to Lord ram. She started living in the Ashram of a sage who did not judge her as the villagers and did not consider her to be impure. She resided in Ved Vyas’s ashram where she gave birth to two sons, Luv and Kush. Luv and Kush grew up to be strong princes.

when it dawned on the villagers that they might have heard their king and queen’s sentiments, they decided to  ask the king, lord ram to bring her back to Ayodhya and give her back the title of Maharani or the Queen. Lord ram set out to bring his queen back to Ayodhya.

At first, his sons did not recognise him. When they were told by Mata Sita that he is their father, they started hating him for leaving their mother alone when she was pregnant and lonely. But as mata Sita decides to make them understand the entire situation, they keep on becoming more considerate towards their father. When they are finally ready to accompany their father to Ayodhyaa, mata sita takes an abrupt decision.

She remembers her vow to mother nature. She made a promise to mother nature that as soon as all her responsibilities will be over she will come in the arms of nature. She dresses up like the queen of Ayodhya and calls mother nature to take her away. Every one begs her not to do this, but then she was the daughter of nature herself. Nobody could be spared from the wrath of nature.

She tells everybody about how this patriarchal society has made things so difficult for a common woman, let alone be a queen. If a queen couldn’t be spared from this, then how could a common lady be spared. Lord ram told her that together they could make changes in the society. But it was queen sita who gave the message that its not easy to change a woman’s mind once it has been made up. She wanted to make sure that people understand that there is a limit to the kind of punishment a person deserve. It was obviously in humane to send a pregnant woman to exile with no fault of her.

  • Draupadi chir haran: we have all learnt about mahabharata as the tale of differences between the kauravas and the pandavas and how the victory of good over evil makes this world a beter place to live in. It is an important episode in the epic of Mahabharat. This stpry still continues to haunt many femist people and normal people in general.

Dhraupadi is the daughter of king dhrupad who loved his daughter very much as it was known that she was born to kill BHishm pitamah. She was married to Arjuna during the ceromony of swayamwar. When arjun reaches home, his mother asked him to divide everything he brings home between his brothers.

This was the question of humanity as how could a woman be married to five people at the same time. Yet she agreed to marry all five brothers and thus the kauravas started telling that dhraupadi is the wife of five brothers. They decide to insult her in the sabha by taking off her clothes and calling her characterless.

If this was not insulting enough, she was asked to make intimate relations with the kauravas. All of this made dhraupadi very helpless as her husbands wer made slaves and were helpless in the court. She was left with only one last straw that is shri Krishna. She prayed to Vasudeva who increased the drape of her clothing and she was never made clothless.

Later on she gave everyone the shrap that she will be the reason for the end of the kauravas. This was how the war of mahabharata took place.

Pandavas beat kauravas in the end and dhraupadi took her revenge. This was the story of faith. But the surprising part is, how could anybody put people or even a woman on the bet prize. How could somebody in her family ask her to strip in front of the entire court. All of this makes people angry and thoughtful at the same time.

If we think about the current scenario, this is probably why women are still not safe even in their own homes. When crimes against women are increasing severely, it is also important dor people to know the consequences of committing a crime against a woman.

Conclusion: in this article we talked about how women where disrespected in the hindu mythology and how these men had to face severe consequences. While we have already talked about the negative parts of womens issues in the article, let us also put a light on the good parts of women empowerment.

Let us talk about the king Seerdhwaj Janak, the father of Sita. He could be known as the first feminist father in the history of human kind. He had only one wife in his entire life. They could not bear a child. His kingdom faced a lot of drought before they found Sita in a satin cloth in he middle of a field. As soon as she was found, she was known as the lucky princess who took away all their sorrows and filled their lives with immense joy, pleasure and ambitions.

After that they also had another daughter urmila. They did not long for a son. They wanted to support their daughters in their education. They wanted to give an all rounder eductation as well as personality development to their children. They never stopped them from exploring life.

Another example is of King Himawan, the father of Mata parvati, who never discouraged her from followin her dreams, including her wish to marry her love, Lord Shiva.

Let us go back to the story of Gunjan saxena. Even her own mother did not support this decision of Gunjan wanting to become an air force pilot. Her brother literaly discouraged her from following her dreams. Only her father supports her. Every girl out there would want her father to be the same as him. In fact, when she competes her mission, her brother understands that his siter is ready to face the world and supports her.

There are many examples from the mythology which proves that life was not all bad for women in those times. Although to make womens lives easier today, I must say that positive examples should be taught more to students so that they understand the meaning of feminism.

As a woman, I have always thought about what would life be if I had not been one? Many women think the same way as I do. Why does the grass feel greener on the other side. Since the day a child is born, the choices of clothes and toys are taken by parents. The color pink is always associated with the girls. Keeping the color combinations aside, as the child grows up, she wants to do things out of curiosity. Everytime she tries to step out of the societal norms and boundaries she is stopped.

In this article we tried to understand what has led to this current scenario and why women still face these issues even after reaching the 21st century. We hope you enjoyed reading this article. Have a nice day! Thank you for reading!
